Gemstone Care Guide
At Kumara Shines, every piece is crafted from genuine natural gemstones set in solid 925 sterling silver. Natural gemstones are unique creations of nature and deserve a little extra care to preserve their beauty for years to come.
Everyday Care
- Wipe your jewellery gently with a soft, lint-free cloth after wearing.
- Store each piece separately in its Kumara Shines jewellery box or a soft pouch to prevent scratches.
- Remove jewellery before exercising, gardening or heavy manual work.
- Avoid exposing your jewellery to perfumes, lotions, hairsprays and household cleaning products.
- Although sterling silver is durable, keeping it dry when not worn will help maintain its shine.
Water & Moisture
Not all gemstones react to water in the same way.
Avoid prolonged contact with water
The following gemstones should be kept as dry as possible:
- Opal – Sensitive to sudden temperature changes and prolonged moisture. Avoid soaking or wearing while swimming, showering or bathing.
- Pyrite – Can tarnish or deteriorate when exposed to moisture over time.
- Malachite – A softer gemstone that can be damaged by water and harsh chemicals.
- Selenite – Water-soluble and should never be immersed in water.
- Turquoise – Porous and may absorb water, oils and cosmetics, which can alter its colour.
For these gemstones, simply wipe with a dry, soft cloth after wearing.
Sunlight & Heat
Natural gemstones are best protected from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive heat, as some stones may fade or become damaged over time.
Extra care is recommended for:
- Amethyst
- Citrine
- Rose Quartz
- Fluorite
- Kunzite
- Opal
Cleaning Your Jewellery
Most gemstone jewellery can be cleaned using a soft cloth. If additional cleaning is needed, use a slightly damp cloth only if it is suitable for your gemstone; then dry immediately.
Avoid:
- Ultrasonic cleaners
- Steam cleaners
- Abrasive polishing products
- Bleach or harsh chemicals
A Note on Natural Gemstones
Every gemstone is naturally unique. Variations in colour, inclusions and patterns are part of their beauty and authenticity—they are not flaws but the signature of nature itself.
With proper care, your Kumara Shines jewellery can be treasured and enjoyed for many years to come.
